The Euro 6/VI regulations concerning greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles present manufacturers with the challenge of reducing several different gases using several different technologies incorporated into the same exhaust system. The reduction of NOX emissions alongside the reduction of CO2 has been a particular challenge for diesel engine manufacturers, and this has accelerated the advances in selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology to meet NOX emission standards.

The Euro VI legislation due to take effect in 2014 requires an 80% reduction in NOX emissions compared with the Euro V standard. It is also expected that there will be a limit set for ammonia slip to control the amount of ammonia released from an SCR system. Several manufacturers are developing systems and components that aim to achieve such high levels of efficiency.

Delphi SCR dosing system

Delphi Automotive has developed an SCR system that improves performance and reliability of the system, as well as reducing NOX and CO2 emissions. The new system, due to be introduced in 2012, injects aqueous urea solution into the SCR system at up to four times the pressure of previous systems, and reduces CO2 by up to 1g/km when compared with similar systems.

The system is made up of three components. The SCR doser, which is an injector with high pressure pump, injects the urea solution directly into the exhaust at a pressure of 20 bar. The urea solution is fed to the doser by a low pressure pump situated in the Urea Delivery module (UDM). The whole process is controlled by the electronics and software used to manage the system.

Rather than use a timed injector opening, the Delphi system uses a positive displacement solenoid pump, which delivers accurate measured quantities of urea solution regardless of the supply pressure.

The stringent standards that are set out in Euro 6/VI legislation for NOX emissions reduction will be followed by even stricter targets for 2020 when details of the EU’s Euro 7/VII regulations are announced. Manufacturers of vehicles, engines, and SCR systems are researching and developing systems and components which can improve performance and efficiency, to enable them to meet these standards.

New innovations in components are being designed continually as the industry gathers pace, and two of the most recent advances are detailed below.

Delphi SCR ammonia (NH3) sensor technology

Due for initial production in 2012, Delphi has developed an ammonia sensor for the automotive industry, which enables more efficient emissions control. The system allows the SCR to work at optimized NOX conversion rates, which in turn improves fuel efficiency.

The sensor dynamically measures the content of ammonia in emissions and the system can adapt the urea dosage accordingly. Some existing SCR technology use a timed urea dosing process; without accurate means of measurement and control excess and residual ammonia can escape via the exhaust stream. It is anticipated that part of the EU directives will relate to the control of ammonia slip from SCR systems, so the monitoring of ammonia levels will soon be an essential requirement.

The ammonia sensor is placed downstream of the SCR catalyst and NOX sensor; it detects the levels of ammonia in the exhaust stream over a range of 0-100ppm. The sensor converts the ammonia into an electrical signal that the electronic control system uses to control the urea solution dosage.
The ammonia sensor is the first technology that enables an SCR system to have a direct closed loop control system; allowing the optimisation of the urea dosage to be controlled by measurement of the emissions.

Future innovation and design

SCR systems have been developed and improved upon very quickly since the EU implemented their emissions strategy and the standards for the industry to comply with. To develop SCR systems to meet requirements of Euro 6/VI regulations, and systems that can be used beyond 2020, manufacturers will require more innovative designs to provide even greater efficiency.

The brakes are the single most important thing on our vehicles. While all of the parts are required to get us moving, these are the parts that are truly designed to keep us safe. We often need to go in to have our brakes checked and have our brakes repaired because of the strong wear and tear that they will see over the course of the life of the car. Quick repair is important to get you back on the road and to keep you as safe on the road as possible.

While brake repair is important, it has a few important qualities that all drivers should understand. Knowing the importance of having your brakes done quickly will encourage you to be vigilant about brake maintenance.

Catching Small Issues and Problems

It is generally most important for those who notice that they have small issues with their brakes. These people generally need their pads replaced but do not have any other problems with their brakes.

This is important for car owners in the sense that it keeps them from dealing with larger brake issues down the road. If you look for quick repair now, you can avoid bigger problems that will require more expensive repairs later on in the life of the vehicle.

Keeping You Safe on the Road

It is important in the sense that it keeps you, and others, safe on the road. It works to make sure that your brakes work properly, which will allow you to avoid accidents on the road. It can give you this safety and do it quickly and efficiently.

Getting You On the Road Quickly

You might be more worried about what’s going on with your car’s engine or the inside detailing than what it takes to maintain your original paint job. Yes, this may not seem like a major concern, but taking care of your car’s paint will allow you to avoid color rusting and fading in the future. In fact, just a few years of hitting the pavement can cause your car’s color to grow fainter and it takes even less time if you live in a climate that requires salt on the roads during wintery conditions.

One of the easiest ways to maintain color radiance is to wash your car. Although it might not seem like a difficult task, there are certain methods you should utilize while washing to get the most out of your car’s color.

Use proper tools. You want to wash your car with safe yet effective tools. Start with a paint-safe washing mitt, a bucket, and cleaning supplies that are specifically designed for vehicle use. You want to find auto cleaning supplies that are pH balanced, non-detergent formulas so they won’t strip your wax. Also, lubrication in these supplies is vital, as this prevents scratching and maintains car shine.

Rinse first! You should always rinse off your car before scrubbing it up. If you skip this step and go right to sudsing, dirt and other containments could scratch your car.

Towel off! Yes, it might be tempting, but skipping the drying process can put your car in worse shape after the wash then it was before you started. In order to prevent water spots, which are essentially mineral deposits directly on your car’s paint, dry off with cotton cloths or sheepskin chamois. Beware of polyester and microfiber cloths, as they can scratch your paint.

Finish off with waxing. You want to wax your car after a good wash and dry in order to protect your paint from harmful chemicals. Not only will wax protect your car against paint fading in the future, but it also makes it look shiny right away. But remember, wax your car when it is out of the line of direct sunlight.

Take one step at a time. It’s important to remember that you should wash and rinse your car in sections, as doing the whole surface area at once will allow soap to dry before it’s rinsed off. Also, read your car’s manufacturing directions on all car care products prior to using them, as your paint might not interact well with certain substances.

Besides a frequent wash, you should also repair car chips and scratches. This will help prevent against rusting and paint discoloration in the future. Yes, it could be costly, but if you want your paint job to last this step is quite necessary.

As you can see, washing your car is the single most important and easiest way to keep your car’s paint job looking new and shiny. Remember, the more you take care of your car, the better it will look in the future.

Your car probably means a lot to you, right? You have most likely invested a great deal of cash (or financing) into your vehicle and try your best to keep it running as perfectly as possible. But ask yourself this: when is the last time you thought about your car’s mirrors? As important safety features, your car’s mirrors allow you as a driver to connect with the other vehicles on the road and maintain an accurate idea of where other automobiles are. Mirrors keep drivers and their passengers safe, keep the number of accidents lower than they could be, and allow you to confidently share the road with other drivers. This being said, you would probably agree that maintaining the integrity of your car’s mirrors is an important aspect of taking care of your car. The truth is, though, most people do not think about their car’s mirrors at all.

So, what can you do to fix this issue? To maintain the quality of your mirrors and ensure that when you need to see behind your vehicle you can do so easily and safely? Follow these tips and your mirrors will help you confidently drive from one location to the next:

Make sure your mirrors are always clean. Though they may seem to be self-cleaning, thanks to rain and other forms of precipitation, you would probably be surprised by how much clearer they can be with just a spray of window cleaner and a quick wipe down. When your mirrors are dirty they can dull the image that you utilize to change lanes, merge into moving traffic, and back out of your driveway—which can lead to accidents. If you want to be sure a lane is clear before merging into it, or be certain that your neighbor’s mailbox is a safe distance away before hitting the gas to reverse out of your driveway, you should pay attention to the cleanliness of your mirrors.

Check periodically to be sure that all of your mirrors are working properly. Regardless of if you have power mirrors or have to roll your window down and push, all side mirrors should be flexible to allow for comfortable use by any driver. Should they stick, fail to move at all, or move too much you should have them looked at by your trusted mechanic.

Rearview mirrors are a must! Many drivers think that they do not need their rearview mirrors if their side mirrors are properly angled, but this just is not true. Of all of the mirrors in your car the rearview will most likely be the first to cause you trouble, as they often detach from the windshield, but you must make it a point to reattach the mirror as soon as possible. Your local auto repair shop should be able to do the trick.

Keeping your mirrors in shape is something that surely not everyone thinks about, but once you lose one or cannot utilize it properly you will definitely see a difference in how easily you can drive. Missing and malfunctioning mirrors can cause you to lose visibility on the road, so be sure that you maintain them!

Imagine that you are driving down the interstate and your tire goes flat. Do you know what to do to fix it? Do you even have the tools necessary to change the tire? Or consider this: you are at a park and your child falls and skins his or her leg. Do you have a bandage handy? Can you take care of the scrapes and cuts quickly to prevent them from getting infected or hurting the child any longer than necessary? If the answer to both of these questions is yes, then you most likely have your emergency maintenance routine down pat. But if your answer to either of these questions is no, then you should probably work in some additional maintenance measures to keep you and your family safe on the road.

Emergency equipment can vary depending upon the kind of vehicle you are driving, but if you follow these tips and adapt them to the needs of your individual car you will be well prepared for almost any issue that may arise.

Always have spare change in your car. You never know when you will need to park at a meter, utilize a pay phone, or be forced onto a toll road. With a couple of dollars in quarters stowed away in one of the many nooks and crannies that cars have for such items you will be prepared for unforeseen circumstances that may crop up.

Never neglect your spare tire! What good will it do if it is flat? When you check the air pressure of the rest of your tires be sure to pop open your trunk and check the spare. This may be easier said than done, as some cars make it easy to reach the spare and others make it more difficult, but when you are changing the tire on the side of the road you will be thankful that you took the few extra minutes necessary to ensure that your spare is road ready.

Keep an emergency first aid kit in your vehicle at all times. Accidents happen, and whether you are on the road and your child gets a nosebleed or you are at the playground and your kid falls you will certainly run into a need for bandages, gauze, and antibiotic ointment. To make sure that you are prepared for any incident, invest in a first aid kit that comes with all of the supplies you will need to keep you and your passengers safe. These can be found in a variety of sizes at your local department store and will certainly prove useful.

Keep a stash of plastic bags in the car. No one likes talking about car sickness, but the truth is that at least one of your passengers is bound to fall victim to it eventually. Be prepared for this ugly truth by keeping at least one or two bags nearby. These can also double as trash bags, so simply refill the stash as you use them and you will be good to go!

Following these tips will help you stay prepared for anything that life may throw at you—so don’t put off getting your emergency supplies any longer!

The pitfalls of buying a cheap alarm can result in frustration at the very least, to having your car stolen from a “secure” location because the alarm system you had been relying on did not do its job.

The number one pitfall in buying a cheap car alarm is that they can easily be disabled or bypassed by an experienced thief. It’s true that if a dedicated thief particularly wants your car, he (or she?) will find a way to make off with your prized possession. However, making it harder for that thief to get away in your car may spell the difference between a close encounter and thousands of dollars in lost investment. This is especially true if you have a lot of gadgets invested in your car, such as GPS navigation, a radar detector, LCD displays and a multi-speaker sound system.

While cheap car alarms nowadays have features that were considered high end several years ago, engine immobilizers, auto arming, light warning and other features may not work reliably down the road. The pitfall of a cheap car alarm is that they will work fine for the first 6 months, if at all, and then start to give you grief by constantly giving false alarms or immobilizing the owner himself at the most inopportune moments. Additionally, cheap systems do not give the degree of adjustability that well-calibrated systems offer, so that false positives are reduced. Nothing is more annoying than a car the keeps on blaring for no apparent reason at all.

Nowadays, a lot of people are justifiably annoyed and irritated at the sound of car alarms because a lot of these are false. A recent independent study has shown that only five percent of car alarms that are triggered are actually necessary. The rest are false alarms. It will not be a surprise to discover that most of these false triggering is the result of overly sensitive car alarms whose settings cannot be adjusted. Over time, the owner will just disconnect the system due to embarrassment, or annoyance, or both. The pitfall in buying a cheap car alarm may not be obvious when you first buy it but if in the long run you stop using an unreliable system, then you will just have thrown your money away.

When you have dampers or shock absorbers that have adjustment features, this usually means that the units are high- or medium-end units at the very least. If you are on the market for shock absorbers and are looking at adjusting dampers to fine tune your car’s handling, bear in mind the primary use of the vehicle that it will be used on. It is illogical to fit shocks with 10-point adjustments for compression and rebound if all the car will see is fast road use. In cases like these, it actually makes better sense to purchase high-end non-adjustable shocks than mid-end adjustable shocks. Adjusting dampers is a trial-and-error affair and finding the perfect settings takes more than one or two test runs.

If you do need to tailor your suspension settings to a fine degree, then adjustable shocks will go a long way towards finding the handling characteristics that suit your driving style. There are plenty of brands and types of adjustable dampers and your choice will depend on the kind of track the vehicle will be used on. Off-road dampers have significantly different characteristics compared to autocross or drag racing dampers.

Assuming that your units are adjustable for both compression and rebound, adjusting dampers takes a few basic principles into account. Compression damping controls the upward vertical movement of the wheels, axles, control rods and (usually) the brakes that make up the unsprung weight of the vehicle. Compression damping regulates upward movement of the suspension when it hits a bump or a rise in the road surface. It should not be used to control dips, body roll or bottoming of the suspension. The ideal bump setting can be at any point within the adjustment range. In adjusting dampers for compression control, you are looking for minimal side-hop in a bumpy turn. When the setting isn’t optimized, a pronounced side-hopping condition will be evident and ride quality will be harsher.

Rebound damping is about controlling the roll (lean) of the car when it enters a turn. Adjusting dampers in the rebound does not limit the total amount of roll; it limits how fast this total roll angle takes place. Roll angles are affected by spring rate, sway bars, roll centre heights and other factors. Too much rebound damping on either end of the vehicle will cause an initial loss of cornering ability at that end. This causes excessive vehicle oversteer or understeer when entering a turn. Too much rebound control does not allow the spring to return to a neutral position before the next bump is encountered. This condition can repeat with closely spaced bumps and can cause the car to lower onto the bump stops. When this happens, there is a dramatic increase in roll stiffness. When this happens on the front, the car will understeer; if it takes place at the rear, the car will oversteer. In adjusting dampers for rebound control, one should increase rebound damping incrementally until the car enters the turns smoothly with no drastic attitude changes and without leaning excessively.

People who own a car know the importance of tyres better than anything else about their cars. Of course, they are the most important accessory to make the car roll. They are directly concerned with your safety. There are different types of tyres available for different kinds of weather conditions. For starters, there are separate ones for winter and summer. It’s important to use the right type as per climatic condition of your area.

If the area where you live in is usually hot and dry, you must get the correct set of summer tyres. These are especially made for regions that have excessive heat. They are made with special compounds which does not allow the tyres to become too soft or too hard. If they become too soft or too hard they cannot maintain grip on the road which could result in accidents.

Summer Tyres for Safety

Summer tyres are made using advanced computerized designs. They ensure the right amount of traction with the road. They help in avoiding friction which could easily wear the them. These tyres are very useful for drivers who drive a lot in hot and humid weathers. They are considered to be a boon on highways because of their efficiency. No one would like to be stranded on a highway with a busted tyre and no mechanic in sight for miles to fix the problem. So you must make prior arrangements accordingly.

There are advanced version of summer tyres available too in case the temperature crosses sixty degree Celsius. These special ones are capable of enduring high temperatures. There are tires available for roads that are excessively muddy and rough. The tread design and the compounds used in manufacturing of these tyres are ideal for rough surfaces.

These tyres usually portray high performance. The compounds with which they are made do not allow the rubber to harden even at very high temperatures and heated metal roads. If you love speed and like to drive fast, you can always choose tyres which have special tread design like sports car tyres. Such tyres can be driven in high-speed on hot and dry surfaces.

On urban areas where multiple-lane roads are usually found, you can drive your vehicle in high-speed with the help of correct summer tyres. These tyres give you a good grip on roads made of concrete and asphalt and thus it gives you a safe journey.
